MONARDA
monarda
( LABIATAE)  Bee Balm

Whether you know them as Beebalm, Oswego Tea, or Wild Bergamot, this carefree perennial is easy to grow in beds, borders, and meadow gardens. They are a favorite of Hummingbirds, who will stop back often while they are in flower.

Blooming in late spring to early summer with flower colors ranging from bright scarlet red, soft pink, purplish violet to white. The 2 inch flowers are very good for cutting and often used in fresh floral arrangements.

Flowers are closely set in 2 layered terminal or axillary clusters. Most are ringed with a red-tinged collar of leafy bracts. Monardas often form large clumps, with erect, square stemmed foliage. The aromatic foliage is toothed, ovate and light to dark green in color.

Monarda is very suscepitible to mildew especially so in dry soils, if possible, plant them in rich soil that retains moisture. Due to extensive cross breeding of the different species, today there are a large number of hybrids and selections to chose from.
